What exactly is a VPN?
With a VPN (Virtual Private Network) you can establish a secure connection to another network online. A VPN hides your IP address and creates an encrypted tunnel to securely transfer your data, making your online actions virtually untraceable. Using a VPN is important to protect your online privacy and data. This also allows you to connect to a network in another region and thus watch your favorite Netflix series.
Why does Netflix restrict VPN use?
Netflix, in turn, has been making frantic efforts to restrict VPN connections since 2016. Not to bully their subscribers. But when a subscriber uses a VPN to watch a show that isn't typically available in their region, Netflix is violating its copyright agreement. And they're quite successful at this. Only the major VPN suppliers manage to stay ahead of Netflix's aggressive tactics.
Security measure for a secure connection
Of course it is the VPN is not (only) there to watch your Netflix series when you are on holiday in another region. VPN is by definition your best friend when using public WiFi, such as your hotel or camping WiFi. Hackers have many methods to steal your data on public Wi-Fi. If you use a VPN, you don't have to worry about that anymore. Using a VPN is a good idea anyway.
A virtual private network (VPN) routes your internet traffic through a VPN tunnel: an encrypted connection between your device and the final destination on the internet. The VPN tunnel not only encrypts your data, but also hides your IP address and your location. Your device (computer, smartphone, tablet, etc.) connects to a VPN server. If the device is recognized, the VPN creates an encrypted tunnel. All data sent via the internet must first be divided into packets. So your private data is distributed, encapsulated and transported through the encrypted VPN tunnel. When the data arrives at the VPN server, the outermost packet is removed to release the data inside, which requires a decryption procedure.
To others, your encrypted data will come off as complete nonsense. So even if they could get to it, ISPs and hackers won't be able to read the information. If you are connected to a VPN server, your use of the internet is hidden behind that IP address and location. Every time you connect, your online identity changes to a new IP address and you are hidden under a new encryption.
